Vikramshila University – A Heritage of Ancient Learning
Vikramshila Mahavihara was one of the important centres of Buddhist learning during the Pala period. Its archaeological remains are located at Antichak in the Kahalgaon subdivision of Bhagalpur district. Bihar Tourism describes the ancient university as a prestigious centre of learning founded by King Dharmapala and notes that the site attracted scholars and visitors because of its historical and architectural importance.
Today, visitors do not see the ancient university as a functioning campus. What remains at Antichak is an important archaeological landscape that helps us understand the scale and character of an ancient residential learning centre. The excavated remains include the large monastery complex, the central stupa and other associated structures.
History of Vikramshila
Vikramshila was established during the reign of Pala ruler Dharmapala. The Pala period is remembered for the development of major Buddhist centres of learning in eastern India. Bihar Tourism places Vikramshila among the ancient centres of learning that made Bihar an important destination for students and scholars from different parts of Asia.
The university developed as a major Mahavihara, combining learning, monastic life and Buddhist scholarship. Historical accounts associate Vikramshila with advanced study in areas including Buddhist philosophy and other branches of knowledge. Bihar Tourism's heritage material describes the institution as having more than a hundred teachers and attracting scholars from across Asia.
Over time, the institution declined along with the political order that supported the great Pala-era Mahaviharas. The surviving archaeological remains are therefore particularly valuable because they preserve physical evidence of this important period of Bihar's intellectual and religious history.
What Can Be Seen at the Archaeological Site?
Central Stupa
The large central stupa is one of the most recognisable features of the excavated complex. Bihar Tourism describes the ruins as having a prominent stupa and monastery remains that reflect the site's Buddhist character.
Monastery Complex
The excavated remains reveal a substantial residential monastery arranged around a central sacred space. The layout provides an important glimpse into how an ancient Mahavihara was organised.
Terracotta & Architectural Remains
Excavation and heritage documentation have revealed brick-built structures and decorative elements, including terracotta work. These remains help visitors appreciate the craftsmanship of the period.
Vikramshila and the Buddhist Learning Tradition
Vikramshila belongs to Bihar's larger Buddhist heritage that also includes Nalanda and other historic centres of learning. Together, these institutions demonstrate the region's role in the development and transmission of Buddhist knowledge.

Where is Vikramshila?
Vikramshila is located at Antichak, Kahalgaon, Bhagalpur, Bihar – 813203. Bihar Tourism places the site approximately 38 km from Bhagalpur. The location is within Kahalgaon subdivision and is accessible by road from Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon.
The Archaeological Survey of India lists the Ancient Site of Vikramshila Monastery at Antichak among its ticketed monuments in the Patna Circle. Visitors should follow the latest ASI instructions and site regulations during their visit.
How to Reach Vikramshila
- From Bhagalpur: Bihar Tourism lists buses and private vehicles as local access options.
- From Kahalgaon: The archaeological site is in the Antichak area and can be approached by local road transport and private vehicles.
- By Rail: Kahalgaon is an important nearby railway point for visitors travelling by train. From there, local road transport can be used to continue towards Antichak.
- Before travelling: Check current opening hours, entry arrangements and ASI/site instructions because visitor information can change.
Best Time to Visit
Bihar Tourism recommends the period from September to April as the best time to visit the Vikramshila site. Weather is generally more comfortable during these months for walking around the open archaeological area.
